The course is connected to the following study programs

  • Bachelor's Programme in Biomedical Laboratory Science

Teaching language

Norwegian.

Course contents

It is taught in the body's normal biochemical processes and disease induced changes in blood and tissues. The course provides the basis for receiving and analyzing samples in medical biochemistry, publish quality-assured response reports and evaluate the final result. There will be an emphasis on using clinically relevant examples. It is taught about quality assessment, mapping errors, use of controls and quality management.

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of the course, the student should be able to:

  • have knowledge of the basic principles of medical biochemistry

  • describe disease processes at various levels in the body

  • have knowledge of changes in biochemical parameters in body fluids during illness

  • interpret and process the results of blood tests and other types of biological material from healthy individuals and patients

  • to explain the principles of analytical methods used in machines

  • have knowledge of and be able to evaluate the use of quality standards and approval procedures in laboratories

  • explain the basic quality assurance and method validation of laboratory analyzes

  • describe the quality system used in laboratories to SSHF

  • reflect on their professional practice

  • work in laboratories, both independently and in groups

Examination requirements

Attendance at all mandatory laboratory exercises must be approved and all laboratory reports must be passed.

Teaching methods

Lectures where some are mandatory.
Required laboratory exercises, claiming the approved report.
Mandatory submission and presentation at a seminar.
For more information see fronts announced.
It is anticipated scope of work 405 hours for the course.

Evaluation

The study programme manager, in consultation with the student representative, decides the method of evaluation and whether the courses will have a midterm- or end of term evaluation, see also the Quality System, section 4.1. Information about evaluation method for the course will be posted on Canvas.

Assessment methods and criteria

A 6-hour written examination under supervision. Graded assessment.

Reduction of Credits
