The course is connected to the following study programs

  • Bachelor's Programme in Biomedical Laboratory Science

Teaching language

Norwegian.

Prerequisites

ML-106 or ML-201 or ML-204.

Recommended prerequisites

First and second year i the study programme.

ML-306, ML-111

Course contents

The course covers special medical microbiology with lectures on human pathogenic microorganisms and infections. The lectures provide the foundation for laboratory experiments where the students analyse various test samples. The students must evaluate the discovery of various microorganisms in a number of test samples in relation to different diagnoses. The mechanisms of action of antibiotics, resistance mechanisms and the development of resistance in bacteria are also covered. Emphasis is placed on the necessity of quality control, quality assurance and internal control mechanisms in the medical microbiological laboratory.

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of the course, the student should be able to

  • account for the characteristics of selected human pathogenic microorganisms and explain how these can cause infectious diseases.

  • describe selected infectious diseases and account for sampling, sample processing and storage of representative samples

  • detect, isolate and identify some important human pathogenic microbes and separate these from the normal flora

  • discuss the importance of different microbiological findings in a sample

  • describe the mechanisms of action of antibiotics and explain resistance mechanisms and the development of resistance in bacteria

  • carry out antibiotic susceptibility tests and point out some resistance mechanisms

  • account for the necessity of quality control, quality assurance and internal control mechanisms as used in a medical microbiological laboratory

Examination requirements

All compulsory assignments must have obtained a Pass.

Teaching methods

Instruction is comprised of lectures, laboratory exercises and group work. It is compulsory to take part in the group work and laboratory exercises. Each student make a collection of written work that fills the learning outcomes. More details about the compulsory assignments and the teaching methods are found in the course room on Canvas.

Evaluation

The study programme manager, in consultation with the student representative, decides the method of evaluation and whether the courses will have a midterm- or end of term evaluation, see also the Quality System, section 4.1. Information about evaluation method for the course will be posted on Canvas.

Assessment methods and criteria

2020
