The course is connected to the following study programs

  • Bachelor's Programme in Biomedical Laboratory Science

Teaching language

Norwegian.

Prerequisites

Courses in blood sampling included in ML-112 must be approved.

Course contents

The course is designed to enable the students to handle and analyse haematological samples, create quality-assured reports and evaluate the final results. The use of cases from clinical practice will be emphasised. Important topics include quality evaluation, sources of error, use of quality controls and quality assurance.

The students will be instructed and trained in blood sampling. The course covers both ethical and technical aspects of blood sampling.

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of the course, the student should

  • Be able to describe the morphology and development of blood cells

  • Be able to describe the normal physiology of blood cells, blood cell diseases and abnormal blood cell function with different organ diseases.

  • Be able to account for the normal coagulation system, bleeding and thrombotic diseases.

  • Be able to apply different manual methods for examining the haematological system and the coagulation system

  • Have knowledge about principles and procedures for carrying out automated analysis, evaluating instrument reports and reporting final results.

  • Be able to assess the results from laboratory sampling in relation to possible sources of error in the test samples and significant pathological conditions.

  • Account for the most important pre- and post-analytical factors that influence the quality of the blood sample

  • Be able to apply different sampling techniques and be familiar with different types of sampling: sampling from children and infants, blood culture sampling and sampling from patients isolated for infection control.

Examination requirements

All compulsory assignments must have obtained a Pass.

Teaching methods

Instruction is comprised of lectures, laboratory exercises and group work. Students will participate in patient sampling together with medical laboratory scientist of the local hospital. It is compulsory to take part in groupwork as well as in practical laboratory work. All reports of practical laboratory exercise has to be passed before the exam takes place.

The course has an expected scope of work of 202 hours.

Evaluation

The study programme manager, in consultation with the student representative, decides the method of evaluation and whether the courses will have a midterm- or end of term evaluation, see also the Quality System, section 4.1. Information about evaluation method for the course will be posted on Canvas.

Assessment methods and criteria

4-hours written individual exam under supervision. Graded assessment.

Reduction of Credits

This course’s contents overlap with the following courses. A reduction of credits will occur if one of these courses is taken in addition:
