The course is connected to the following study programs

  • Specialisation in Information Systems
  • PhD Programme in Social Sciences

Teaching language

English

Course contents

  • research paradigms in IS

  • research design

  • theoretical constructs and empirical operationalization

  • quantitative research methods, such as: survey research, questionnaire construction and validation, statistical analysis methods, issues in using software for statistical analysis, survey research, etc.

  • qualitative research methods, such as: qualitative data collection and analysis, case studies

  • combining research methods

  • proactive research approaches, such as design research, action research and combining design research and action research

The objective of the course is to develop knowledge and skills in the application and use of different research methods in Information Systems research. The relationship between research problem, design, and methods of analysis will be highlighted. The students will gain an understanding of the implications of trade-offs that characterize every research project.

Learning outcomes

Upon successful completion of the course, the student will be able to

  • describe and explain the different research paradigms used in IS research, the process of conducting research, philosophical background on the nature and limitations of the research/science paradigm, and how knowledge is transmitted and grown

  • apply the various research approaches used in IS research: qualitative, quantitative, and proactive research

  • describe the role of research methods in a research project such as their dissertation work.

Evaluation

The PhD programme manager, in consultation with the student representative, decides the method of evaluation and whether the courses will have a midterm- or end of term evaluation, see also the Quality System, section 4.1. Information about evaluation method for the course will be posted on Canvas.

Assessment methods and criteria

The students will be evaluated based on a term paper developing a research design for a doctoral research project.
