Recommended prerequisites

Normally the compulsory subjects must be completed and the specialisation should be selected before receiving tuition on the master thesis.

Course contents

The course is primarily related to the student¿s research question and the work on it. The research and analysis must be related to change processes which in some way is connected to a broader international context. Also, the thesis must be related to one of the chosen specialisations; either sociology or social work/child welfare.

Learning outcomes

Through the work with the master thesis the student will

  • formulate a research question and answer it by using research methods and theoretical perspectives

  • acquire knowledge related to the subject in question and the research context of the topic chosen

  • acquire experience in conducting an independent, research-based work

Examination requirements

Two compulsory seminars are held; one with a presentation of a project plan or outline which must be approved for further tuition. In the second seminar the student gives a brief lecture on the finished master thesis. This oral presentation (brief lecture) on the work and findings of the master thesis must be approved before the student gets the final evaluation of the thesis.

Teaching methods

There are written guidelines for the thesis on length, content, process and procedures etc. A copy of these guidelines is available on request from the faculty and are made available in Canvas at the start of the semester.

The master thesis is normally written individually. However, two students may apply to write the master thesis together should they wish to do so.

Students will receive tuition on their master thesis as per agreement. Students will receive tuition by one appointed supervisor.

Evaluation

Course evaluation is carried out as a midterm evaluation in accordance with standard procedure in the quality assurance system, chapter 2.1.1., unless other information is given in the beginning of the semester.

Assessment methods and criteria

The master thesis constitutes 100% of the final grade. Graded assessment.

The thesis will be evaluated by the supervisor and an external sensor.

The master thesis is marked within 6 weeks from the delivery.
