Teaching language
NorwegianRecommended prerequisites
Basic skills in social research methods and in statistics (ME-100 10 SP).
Course contents
Develop research questions that are empirically researchable, including how to find relevant literature and theory to develop and extend research questions. Furthermore, there will be an introduction to how to design research, with an emphasis on two different epistemologies: variance and process design. The majority of the course will focus on practical data analysis. First, a basic introduction to qualitative content analysis will be given. Second, there will be a rather thorough introduction to quantitative analysis using SPSS. Building on previous knowledge of univariate and bivariate analysis, this course focuses on multivariate techniques like multiple linear regression, logistic regression, factor analysis and correspondence analysis.
Learning outcomes
On successfull completion of the course, the student should be able to:
-
Develop an empirically aplicable research question
-
Assess the relevance of various research designs and methods of data collection
-
Selecting analytical methods that are relevant given the research question
-
Search for and find relevant literature and discuss an empirical analysis in light of theory
-
Be able to use statistical analysis software (SPSS) to process and analyze data.
Teaching methods
Weekly lectures.Alternation between lectures, laboratory exercises and individual work with specific assignments.
Examination requirements: Individual submissions.
Evaluation
The study programme manager, in consultation with the student representative, decides the method of evaluation and whether the courses will have a midterm- or end of term evaluation, see also the Quality System, section 4.1.
