The course is connected to the following study programs

  • Mechatronics, Bachelor's Programme

Recommended prerequisites

MAS102, MAS130, MAS100

Course contents

The course contains lectures and exercises regarding theory (approx. 12 ECTS) that is to be applied in a project work (approx. 8 ECTS). The content is a continuation on the content in previous courses and will include

  • Material properties, systematic selection of materials, specification of materials.

  • Fatigue load on machine elements and structural elements (Whöler curve/SN-curve and Goodman diagram)

  • Applied FEM

  • Modeling and simulation of machines

  • Systematic design in a CAD-tool

  • Project work in a group. Technical documentation and communication.

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of the course, the student is expected to:

Knowledge

  • have knowledge about common construction materials

  • have knowledge about methods used to set dimensions for complete mechanical systems and the individual components

  • have knowledge about methods for simulation of machines

Skills

  • have skills within selection and specification of common construction materials

  • have skills to set dimensions for structural elements and machine elements exposed to fatigue load

  • have skills to dimension welded joints and bolt connections exposed to fatigue load

  • have skills to model and simulate machines

  • have skills to do a complete and systematic design of a mechanical system in a CAD-tool

General competences

  • have the competence to evaluate the interaction between load on and design of a mechanical system

  • have the competence to communicate a mechanical design with drawings and technical documentation

Examination requirements

Satisfactory submission of possible compulsory exercises to deliver the project and attend the exam. The number of compulsory exercises will be announced in Canvas at the beginning of the course.

Evaluation

The study programme manager, in consultation with the student representative, decides the method of evaluation and whether the courses will have a midterm- or end of term evaluation, see also the Quality System, section 4.1. Information about evaluation method for the course will be posted on Canvas.

Offered as Single Standing Module

Yes. Subject to availability or capacity.

Assessment methods and criteria

Project work done in group (weight 60%) and oral presentation and defense of the project in group (weight 40%). Graded assessment. Both parts must be passed to pass the course.

Reduction of Credits

This course’s contents overlap with the following courses. A reduction of credits will occur if one of these courses is taken in addition:

Course Reduction of Credits
MAS244 – Design of Mechanical Systems 20
MAS232 – Quality Management for Aeronautical Engineers 10
MAS233 – Introduction to Computational Fluid Dynamics - CFD 10
