Recommended prerequisites

MAS107 Control Theory, MAS218 Electrical Circuits and PLC Programming, MA-154 Mathematics 1, MA-160 Mathematics 2 or equivalent.

Course contents

Principles and operation of a DC / AC servo motors and step motors with drive circuits. Load Analysis: calculation of the mass moment of inertia, velocity profile. Functionality, features, sizing and selection of drive components: gears, screws, shafts, chains, tangential drive etc. Principles for design of series compensators and cascade control. Building applications in C - data types, loops, selection, functions, tables, strings, pointers, structures and in-/out programming. Internal microcontroller functions - PWM, Timers, AD / DA and external interrupt.

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of the course, the student should be able to

  • apply the methods of analysis and design of systems for motion control

  • explain the most commonly used components for such systems

  • dimension and selecting components to this type of systems

  • design controllers based on the requirements for stability and accuracy

  • be familiar with micro controller structure and programming of these in C, and being able to develop applications for controls servo systems

Evaluation

The study programme manager, in consultation with the student representative, decides the method of evaluation and whether the courses will have a midterm- or end of term evaluation, see also the Quality System, section 4.1. Information about evaluation method for the course will be posted on Canvas.

Offered as Single Standing Module

Yes

Assessment methods and criteria

Individual computer based exam, 4 hours (60% contribution to the final assessment), and project report with compulsory presentation (40% contribution to the final assessment). Graded assessment.
