Course contents

  • Introduction to basic differential and integral calculus.

  • Functions, continuity and differentiability.

  • Derivatives and applications of derivatives.

  • Integration, integration methods and applications of integration.

  • Taylor polynomials with remainder and Taylor series.

  • Complex numbers.

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of this course the student should

  • be familiar with applications of mathematics in engineering

  • know and be able to use terms, results and methods related to functions of one variable, such as limits, continuity, differentiation, integration and differential equations

  • know the Taylor series of core functions, and know that these can be differentiated and integrated

  • know complex numbers in rectangular and polar form and know Euler’s formula

  • be able to solve problems using analytical methods

  • know and be able to use numerical methods to solve equations, integrals and differential equations

  • be able to use software tools for simple numerical calculations and be familar with some limitations in applications of mathematical software

Examination requirements

A sufficient number of approved mandatory exercises. Information about the mandatory exercises will given in Canvas at the start of the semester.

Lectures, tutorial groups for exercises, mandatory assignments. Information on exercises will be provided in Canvas.

Assessment methods and criteria

Individual written exam, 4 hours. Graded A-F.
