The course is connected to the following study programs

  • Bachelor's Programme in Mathematics
  • Advanced Teacher Education level 8-13, 5-year Master's Programme
  • Mathematics, 1-year Programme

Teaching language

Norwegian

Recommended prerequisites

MA-163

Course contents

Basic concepts in statistic, probability theory, probability distributions, moment generating functions, random variables, expected values, variance, conditional probability, joint probability distribution, central limit theorem, stochastic processes in discrete and continuous time, point estimation and confidence intervals, tests of hypotheses, interference based on two samples, linear regression, applications

Learning outcomes

The student is able to

  • know the basic concepts in statistics and probability theory and the relation between these

  • solve simple combinatorial problems

  • use probability distributions for everyday probability problems and know when to apply the different distributions

  • use the most common probability distributions and their properties, as well as the central limit theorem, to analyze random samples and testing hypotheses

  • determine whether there is a correlation between two variables and describe this relationship using linear regression

Examination requirements

Required assignments must be approved, see Canvas for more information.

Teaching methods

Lectures, work in small groups and compulsory assignemets. The course has an expected workload of around 400 hours.

Evaluation

The study programme manager, in consultation with the student representative, decides the method of evaluation and whether the courses will have a midterm- or end of term evaluation, see also the Quality System, section 4.1. Information about evaluation method for the course will be posted on Canvas.

Offered as Single Standing Module

Yes

Assessment methods and criteria

6-hour written examination. Graded assessment.
