Course contents

Arithmetic and algebra, set theory, equations and inequalities, trigonometry, functions, limits and continuity, differentiation, geometry, exponential and logarithm functions, vectors, integration and differential equations.

Learning outcomes

After completing the course, the student is expected to:

  • have necessary knowledge in mathematics to start engineering studies

  • have developed skills in basic subjects in mathematics and training in the mathematic way of thinking

  • have practice in applying mathematics to solve technical and practical problems

  • understand that practical problems may be solved with the aid of mathematics

Examination requirements

Mandatory assignments must be approved, and the student must attend the mandatory tests during the semester. The portfolio must be assessed to a pass for the student to take the written exam. The assessment of the portfolio will be based on the results of mandatory tests and assignments. Detailed requirements for the contents of the portfolio will be given in Canvas at the start of the semester.

Evaluation

The study programme manager, in consultation with the student representative, decides the method of evaluation and whether the courses will have a midterm- or end of term evaluation, see also the Quality System, section 4.1. Information about evaluation method for the course will be posted on Canvas.

Assessment methods and criteria

Written examination, 5 hours (60 % contribution to final mark) and portfolio (40 % contribution to final mark). Graded mark. The portfolio must be assessed to Pass to take the written examination.
