Course contents

The course is divided into two parts which treat two important phases of film production: Working with actors and film music.

Learning outcomes

Upon completion of the course the students will

  • Have knowledge about different acting techniques, and be familiar with improvisation and the use of improvisation in scene direction

  • Be familiar with a variety of genres and the most prominent film composers from the days of the silent movie until today

  • Be able to carry out scene analysis based on the perspectives of both the actors and the director

  • Be familiar with the historically most significant schools of music for motion pictures

  • Have knowledge about various forms of collaboration between the director and the composer

  • Have knowledge about the power of film music, its ability to direct and alter the impression of a cinematic production, and the relation between image and sound in the emotional experience of the audience

Examination requirements

Approved mandatory attendance requirements, as specified in the semester plan, and approved exercise assignements.

Teaching methods

The work with the interdisciplinary project will alternate between plenary meetings and group work.

There will be mandatory attendance requirements: 80% of the practical teaching and the practical exercises. Detailed information about the mandatory attendance will be given in the semester plan.
The workload is estimated to about 270 hours.

Evaluation

The study programme manager, in consultation with the student representative, decides the method of evaluation and whether the courses will have a midterm- or end of term evaluation, see also the Quality System, section 4.1. Information about evaluation method for the course will be posted on Canvas.

Assessment methods and criteria

Interdisciplinary project in groups. After showing the final product, there will be an oral presentation where the students will explain the process, the aesthetical choices and theoretical perspectives.

Assessment : Pass / Fail
