Course contents

The course aims at giving a deeper understanding of the characteristics of short film as aesthetic expression. The perspectives are both analytical and practically performing. The course develops the ability to analyze and evaluate short film texts, and through small and greater projects, theory and practice will be mutually enriching.

Central themes will be:

  • Variation in narration and genre

  • Film analysis with tools that are specific to the short format

  • Developing manuscripts

  • Planning and shooting routines

Learning outcomes

Upon completion of the course the student shall

  • Have significant knowledge about the form and content of short film

  • Have a broad film analytic understanding

  • Master a theoretical term base and be able to reflect on his/her own and others' artistic choices

  • Be able to plan and carry out a film project

Examination requirements

  • Approved group based video production

  • Approved individual assignment

  • The compulsory attendance requirements as described in the semester plan, must be met

  • Approved exercise assignements

Teaching methods

The teaching will be given as lectures, seminars, film viewings, reflection tasks, exercises and a larger project. A comprehensive final project will result in a production that may be shown at national arenas for short film.

There is an 80 % attendance requirement in practical teaching and exercises. Detailed information will be given in the semester plan.

The workload is estimated to 400 hours.

Evaluation

The study programme manager, in consultation with the student representative, decides the method of evaluation and whether the courses will have a midterm- or end of term evaluation, see also the Quality System, section 4.1. Information about evaluation method for the course will be posted on Canvas.

Assessment methods and criteria

A short film product created in a group and an individually written reflection report are assessed together.
