Course contents

In this course, we will explore the term genre by examining selected film genres and films that belong to, exceed and/or challenge this category. An important part of the course will be to explain how film genre is closely connected to sociopolitical and cultural factors in society.

Learning outcomes

Upon completion of the course the students shall

  • Be familiar with selected film genres

  • Have knowledge about the characteristics of film and its place in society (sociopolitical debates and ethical questions)

  • Be able to think critically and consciously about the term genre

  • Be able to make a scientific film analysis

  • Be able to present film analyses based on the science of film and thereby contribute to new interpretations within the subject area

  • Be able to exchange views and interpretations with others based on the problems and empirical data of the subject

  • Be able to apply scientific knowledge to practical and theoretical problems and make justified decisions

Examination requirements

Compulsory attendance (at least 80 %), and approved oral presentation.

Teaching methods

The teaching will be in the form of lectures, seminars, film viewings and reflection tasks.

The workload is estimated to 400 hours.

Evaluation

The study programme manager, in consultation with the student representative, decides the method of evaluation and whether the courses will have a midterm- or end of term evaluation, see also the Quality System, section 4.1.
