  • Bachelor's Programme in Literature, Film and Theatre
  • Literature, Film and Theatre, One-year Programme

Teaching language

Course contents

Based on examples of analysis from various aesthetic expressions, the course includes basic theory and concepts related to literature, film and theatre. The main focus is on narrative theory. This content will give students the necessary basis for the project-organised thematic work in literature, theatre and film.
The analytic and creative work may take as its starting point a theme, an issue of narrative form, or an existing artistic expression in one or more of the art expressions that are studied in the course. Theoretical reflection is part of the project work. The different projects have different focus:
- A merger of expressions (multimodality);

- Transmediation: transferring from one form to another;
- How a form of expression can benefit by support from other forms of expression. The course aims to have students experiment with different expressions during the semester.

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of the course, the students should

  • have knowledge about selected genres related to literature, film and theatre

  • have theoretical and analytical insight

  • be able to compare narratives in literature, theatre and film within different genres, media and cultural contexts

  • be able to reflect about their own aesthetic expression through projects based on textual, filmic, scenic forming of narratives

Examination requirements

  • Approved compulsory attandance as indicated in the semester schedule

  • Approved written paper and academic blog

Teaching methods

The scheduled teaching varies with introductory lectures, seminars where students themselves present topics in various ways, and supervised projects. A series of at least 3 projects are carried out during the semester, where students work either independently or in groups. Each project ends with a presentation and a theoretical reflection, either in the form of a paper or a conversation.
It is compulsory in engineering work, views, and in film and theatre production parts. Detailed overview of the compulsory attendance will be described in term plans.

The workload is estimated to about 800 hours.

Evaluation

The study programme manager, in consultation with the student representative, decides the method of evaluation and whether the courses will have a midterm- or end of term evaluation, see also the Quality System, section 4.1.

Assessment methods and criteria

  • A final project with groups of 3 to 6 students over several weeks, with presentation and discussion, that counts 40%.

  • A written, individual 4-hour examination that counts 60%.

Graded assessment.
