Prerequisites

50 ECTS credits of the Master’s programme must have been completed.

Course contents

The course content is primarily related to the students’ work with their individually chosen theses. The thesis is an independent R&D work and is accomplished under supervision. The thesis will generally be based on empiric material from a public or private enterprise or organization, but the thesis may also have a theoretical main focus. Through the work with the thesis, the students shall utilize and further develop the theoretical, analytical and methodical competence that they have obtained through the study programme.

Learning outcomes

Upon completion of the thesis the students shall

  • Have the knowledge and skills to carry out independent R&D projects

  • Be able to familiarize themselves with existing research and use this as a foundation for further research

  • Be able to produce new knowledge and research based information

  • Be able to choose and use adequate research methods on academic problems

  • Be able to disseminate R&D projects

Examination requirements

  • Oral presentation of the master’s project

  • Minimum two meetings with the supervisor

Teaching methods

The workload is estimated to 1080 hours. The thesis involves independent R&D work under supervision. The supervisor will be appointed based on the project design. The thesis will normally be individual. Recommended scope is 25.000 to 30.000 words. Two meetings with the supervisor are compulsory. In addition, voluntary courses in academic writing will be arranged to support the work, as well as a presentation seminar where each student will present their project orally.

Evaluation

The study programme manager, in consultation with the student representative, decides the method of evaluation and whether the courses will have a midterm- or end of term evaluation, see also the Quality System, section 4.1. Information about evaluation method for the course will be posted on Canvas.
