Course contents

The course focuses on the similarities and differences between journalism and PR work. Using relevant theory and examples, both journalistic methods and PR campaigns appearing in the media are critically discussed during the course.

Learning outcomes

Upon completion of the course, students will be able to:

  • produce and assess news bulletins and press material

  • clarify the function of journalism as well as relevant journalistic genres and working methods

  • explain relevant theories related to marketing and PR strategy

  • explain what news is and the processes that lie behind editorial choices

  • discuss the relationship between journalism and PR

Examination requirements

Two compulsory assignments must be assessed as a Pass. Instructions for the assignments are announced in Canvas. Completed and passed oral presentation related to the group project.

Teaching methods

Lectures, seminars and project work in group. The workload is estimated to about 270 hours.

Evaluation

The study programme manager, in consultation with the student representative, decides the method of evaluation and whether the courses will have a midterm- or end of term evaluation, see also the Quality System, section 4.1.

Assessment methods and criteria

Group based project assignment (counts 60% of final mark) and oral examination (counts 40% of final mark). Graded assessment.
