Recommended prerequisites

Successful prior completion of 60 ECTS in arts and crafts is recommended.

Course contents

In this course, students will work thematically with the contemporary visual phenomena that occupy today's children, adolescents and adults. The term visual culture is used to describe a field where traditional categories like art and architecture are expanded to include photography, comic strips, etc. and which incorporate reflexive and creative approaches to important contemporary themes. Photography, film, video and digital media are the typical tools for documentation and production throughout the course. Theories of visual culture, didactics and aesthetics are integrated into the course.

Learning outcomes

Upon completion of the course, students will:

• be able to explain terms connected to the theory of visual culture

• be able to analyse, discuss and debate issues connected to visual culture and see this in a didactical perspective

• be able to produce their own expressions or projects based on an investigative approach to relevant contemporary themes

• be able to assess various objects or projects in the light of aesthetic and communicative aspects including formal, material and content elements, and be able to reflect upon the use of such tools in their own creative work

• have attained knowledge and skills in selected forms of production in visual culture

• have competence in working theoretically, practically and investigatively with visual culture from various angles.

Examination requirements

In order to take the examination, the student must:

• have all mandatory assignments approved. Exactly which assignments are mandatory will be specified in the descriptions given at the start of each workshop period.

• have mandatory attendance approved

Evaluation

The study programme manager, in consultation with the student representative, decides the method of evaluation and whether the courses will have a midterm- or end of term evaluation, see also the Quality System, section 4.1. Information about evaluation method for the course will be posted on Canvas.

Assessment methods and criteria

One individual practical examination that will also contain a written component where the student will reflect upon certain academic aspects of the project. (The practical component counts 60% and the written part 40%.)
In addition, a presentation of selected work from the semester will be exhibited. Which work is to be exhibited will be given notice by the instructor with at least two weeks' notice before the exhibition (this may be used to adjust the grade awarded on the practical examination). Graded assessment.
