Prerequisites

Fundamental skills in the subject (equivalent to 30 ECTS or more) are highly recommended.

Course contents

In this course students will work with design processes where they analyse the relationship between form and function, use of materials, choice of tools and methods of production. Through their own creative work, students will attain knowledge of which principles form the foundation of construction and the use of materials in architecture and design.

Learning outcomes

Upon completion of the course, students will:

  • understand the principles that form the foundation of architectural constructions and be able to explain constructive solutions in architecture and furniture design

  • have attained knowledge of the potential and limitations of different materials and be able to apply this to practical exercises connected to construction

  • have attained an academic vocabulary to enable them to discuss and debate issues of an aesthetic and constructive nature

  • be able to analyse a designer product in terms of aesthetic, symbolic, functional and technical-material qualities

  • be able to reflect upon and discuss educational aspects of creative work connected to design and construction

  • be able to present their own work aesthetically and informatively

Examination requirements

In order to take the examination, the student must:

  • Have all mandatory assignments approved

  • Exactly which assignments are mandatory will be specified in the descriptions given at the start of each workshop period.

  • Have mandatory attendance approved

Evaluation

The study programme manager, in consultation with the student representative, decides the method of evaluation and whether the courses will have a midterm- or end of term evaluation, see also the Quality System, section 4.1. Information about evaluation method for the course will be posted on Canvas.

Assessment methods and criteria

Individual exhibition and presentation of work from the semester with accompanying documentation / portfolios. Graded assessment.
