Recommended prerequisites

Successful prior completion of at least 60 ECTS of arts and crafts is recommended.

Course contents

The course will consist of workshops within relevant fields of materials. This will vary from year to year. A specialisation in a certain material in a traditional context will provide challenges and opportunities for working with their own expression in contemporary perspective. Impulses from a multitude of expressions, in fine art and from contemporary arts and crafts, are of vital importance to creative work. The aesthetic creative work will take place in a dialogue between form, expression and contrasts in the treatment of materials.

Learning outcomes

Upon completion of the course, students will:

  • be aware of forms of expression and use of materials and techniques from contemporary arts and crafts

  • be familiar with contemporary art and the culture of forms and view this in the light of tradition

  • be able to assess and apply materials based on knowledge of their characteristics and applications

  • be able to move between traditional forms of expression to contemporary forms in work with their own products

  • show an aesthetic awareness of the interplay between materials, techniques, functions and expression of forms

  • be able to employ relevant methods for assembling various combinations of materials

  • have increased technical skills, as well as being able to use and maintain machines and tools

  • be able to analyse their own work as well as other products, and be able to communicate this to others

Examination requirements

In order to take the examination, the student must:

  • have all mandatory assignments approved. Exactly which assignments are mandatory will be specified in the descriptions given at the start of each workshop period.

  • have mandatory attendance approved

Evaluation

The study programme manager, in consultation with the student representative, decides the method of evaluation and whether the courses will have a midterm- or end of term evaluation, see also the Quality System, section 4.1. Information about evaluation method for the course will be posted on Canvas.

Assessment methods and criteria

Individual examination, exhibition and presentation of selected work from the semester with accompanying documentation / portfolios. Graded assessment.

Material costs and expenses for compulsory study trips and excursions should be expected.
