Course contents

The course will give students the foundation to be able to undertake a master project in fine arts by providing insight and understanding for the artistic and scientific-theoretical foundation for various types of artistic research. Further, the course will give students solid familiarity with different methods that can be applied to artistic research and their use in an ethically and scientifically defensible ways. The course will give students the necessary theoretical and methodological tools to be able to describe and develop their field and to be able to select and apply appropriate artistic, aesthetic and scientific discourses related to the master project.

Learning outcomes

Upon completion of the course, students will:

  • know the various scientific-theoretical perspectives and scientific methods, and be able to reflect upon their relevance and limitations, as well as the standards that are required for scientific argumentation

  • know different approaches in fine arts and aesthetical theory, and be able to look at these in relation to scientific theory and scientific methods

  • know which aesthetic guidelines apply to science and research, as well as the researcher's responsibility for his fellow man and society

  • have insight into different research roles, from the observant, to the involved to the intervening researcher, and how research can understand and develop the field of practice

Be able to develop an exploratory design for their own research and development project based on the methods and theories that apply to the discipline.

Examination requirements

  • Approved project description for the master's thesis

  • Approved topic for the scientific essay (examination)

 

Additional information will be given at the start of the semester.

Teaching methods

Instruction will be given as group lectures, supervision and group work. Colloquia will also be established. Development of the project description for the master 's thesis will be prioritised. The project description will define the field, methodology and theory of the thesis.

Evaluation

The study programme manager, in consultation with the student representative, decides the method of evaluation and whether the courses will have a midterm- or end of term evaluation, see also the Quality System, section 4.1. Information about evaluation method for the course will be posted on Canvas.

Assessment methods and criteria

Individual written semester assignment with supervision. Indicative scope approx. 3000 words.
Assessment: Graded A-F
