IS-406 Enterprise Systems I

Normally Norwegian. English if English speaking students attend the course.

Course contents

The course will provide an overview over various information systems that supports digitalization of enterprise-wide functions and processes. The students will be given a fundamental insight into the critical factors for planning, implementing and use of such applications, as well as which role the applications will have in an integrated and sustainable IS infrastructure. Possibilities and constraints of the various systems are discussed, as well as the factors that influence the implementation and use.

Examples of categories of various systems/applications that will be dealt with:

• Supply Chain Management (SCM)

• Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP)

• Customer Relationship Management (CRM)

• Knowledge Management Systems (KMS)

• Data Warehousing, Big Data and Business Intelligence

• Service Oriented Architecture (SOA)

• Cloud Computing Services

Learning outcomes

Upon successful completion of the course, students should

• know and be able to discuss the most important concepts of modern Enterprise Systems (ES).

• know how such systems relate to other systems, the purpose and expected utility and effects, organizational and technological challenges in the implementation

• know the organizational and technological challenges related to digitalization of enterprises and implementation of ES

• be able to find and use new knowledge, and evaluate the possibilities for using Enterprise Systems in a given organization and to analyze the suitability for a given ES package in an organization

Examination requirements

Approved mandatory presentations and hand-ins. Some of the lectures are compulsory, and all guest lectures and lab assignments require compulsory participation. Details are given at the start of term.

Teaching methods

Normally 6 hours of lectures and group work per week. Expected workload for 10 ECTS is 13 hours per week.

Evaluation

The study programme manager, in consultation with the student representative, decides the method of evaluation and whether the courses will have a midterm- or end of term evaluation, see also the Quality System, section 4.1. Information about evaluation method for the course will be posted on Canvas.

Assessment methods and criteria

A 4-hour written examination comprising 60 %, and project assignment(s) in groups comprising 40 % of the final grade. Both parts must be passed. Information about requirements and compulsory attendance will be given at the start of the semester.
