Course contents

The course gives an introduction to:

  • conduct analysis by data modelling

  • design a database using the relational model

  • perform normalization

  • develop a database using SQL

Learning outcomes

Upon successful completion of the course, the students will be able to:

  • conduct analysis, design and construction of simple relational databases

  • explain the key principles for the organization and management of relational data

  • perform normalization

  • use SQL to define and manage a relational database

  • explain the principles of controlling parallel processes in databases

Teaching methods

Teaching activities consist of lectures and organised lab work. Instruction in IS-201 is coordinated with IS-200 og IS-202. This coordination makes it difficult to take IS-201 without taking the other courses during the same semester.

Estimated workload is 270 hours.

Evaluation

The study programme manager, in consultation with the student representative, decides the method of evaluation and whether the courses will have a midterm- or end of term evaluation, see also the Quality System, section 4.1. Information about evaluation method for the course will be posted on Canvas.

A 4-hour written individual examination, graded A-F.
