Norwegian or English. The course will be taught in English if exchange students are following the course.

Recommended prerequisites

It is an advantage to have taken IKT106 Network Administration, or equivalent.
Some knowledge in using Linux /Unix is expected.

Course contents

The course should be viewed in the context with IKT106 Network Administration, which this course can be seen as a continuation of. Provides further introduction and practical experience in setting up, running, monitoring and maintaining networks.
Basics for necessary background knowledge a system administrator needs to manage networks and the most important services within the Internet/Intranet. Assessment of security measures. Network protocols for operation and monitoring, crisis/disaster planning, network with multi-protocols. Installation and management of e.g. web, email, DNS and other similar services.

Learning outcomes

After completing the course the student should:

  • Have a basic understanding of what it takes to set up, monitor, and operate a computer network.

  • Be able to set up regular services on a server, such as e.g. e-mail, web sites, etc.

  • Be able to manage regular services on a server.

  • Be able to evaluate what services an organization should offer itself.

Examination requirements

Compulsory exercises must be approved in order to take the exam. An overview of compulsory exercises is given at the beginning of the semester in Canvas.

Teaching methods

Lectures, lab exercises and project work that count as part of the exam. The exercises take place in computer labs on specially adapted machines. Department engineer, student assistant and/or subject teacher are present. Training is provided in the use of subject-related software and hardware. The classes are divided into groups of appropriate size so that all students will have access to the necessary equipment and the help they need to solve the tasks. Some of the exercises take place as group work. Students set up and use different network systems.

Evaluation

The study programme manager, in consultation with the student representative, decides the method of evaluation and whether the courses will have a midterm- or end of term evaluation, see also the Quality System, section 4.1. Information about evaluation method for the course will be posted on Canvas.

Assessment methods and criteria

Project assignment in group counts 30%. Written examination 3 hours, counts 70%. Graded assessment.
