Course contents

- Introduction to and practical experience of design, planning, installation, configuration and support of networks.

- Backup and planning of backup.

- Components in the network such as switches, routers, cables and hardware as used in networks, with a focus on components used in servers.

- Introduction and configuration of the most common operating systems used in networks, with a focus on components used in servers.

- Installation, administration and use of these systems.

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of the course, the student should:

- understand how to build a computer network

- be able to compare and evaluate the different components of a computer network

- be able to install and use the most common network operating systems

Examination requirements

Students must pass compulsory assignments and the project in order to take the examination. An overview of the compulsory assignments will be given in the LMS by the start of the semester.

Teaching methods

Lectures, laboratory exercises and project work that counts as part of the exam. The exercises take place in the computer laboratory on customized computers with specialized hardware and software. A laboratory engineer, student assistant and/or course lecturer is present. The students get training in installation and use of relevant software and hardware. The classes are split into groups of suitable sizes so that all students get access to necessary equipment and the help they need to solve the exercises. Some of the exercises involve group work. The students should also take apart and build up different network systems.

Evaluation

The study programme manager, in consultation with the student representative, decides the method of evaluation and whether the courses will have a midterm- or end of term evaluation, see also the Quality System, section 4.1. Information about evaluation method for the course will be posted on Canvas.

Assessment methods and criteria

3-hour written examination. Graded assessment.
