Course contents

The course is a part of the 1-year programme in educational theory and practice which consists of didactics in one or two school subjects, pedagogy and practice.

 

The course is subdivided into three main areas:

- The school's position in society and the subject's place in education

- Pupil knowledge and the role of the teacher

- Teaching and learning

 

The school's position in society and the subject's place in education focuses on how education policy affects the subject. It will be discussed how society level affects curriculum, goals, contents, work methods and assessment methods in physical education and sports in upper secondary education. Critical reflection upon didactical problems in which questions about the subject physical education's legitimacy as a school subject will be of particular interest.

Pupil knowledge and the role of the teacher deals with knowledge about youth culture and diversity of the pupils' background and abilities, cultural and social differences included. Reflection upon professional ethics and what the role as a teacher in physical education and sports implies, will be focused.

Teaching and learning deals with didactical problems focusing on contents, work methods, learning strategies and teaching aids. Based on the students' knowledge and insight into the subject's didactics the course will focus on didactical reflections related to teaching physical education and sports at upper secondary level.

    The student

    • is able to plan, manage and evaluate his/her teaching in physical education and sports in upper secondary school

    • is able to apply varied learning strategies and adapt the teaching to various specializations, and has the ability to apply various forms of assessment which promote learning

    • is able to facilitate a learning environment which includes young people with minority backgrounds and other young people with spesific challenges

    • is able to search for research literature and to apply relevant theory in a critical and reflected manner in own research and development work

    • is able to plan and carry out practice-related research and development work, as well as to discuss and communicate the results in a structured and scientific manner

 

  • General competence
    The student

    • is able to further develop a professional attitude towards the teaching profession, and critically reflect upon professional ethical issues

    • is able to act as academically competent and didactically reflected in his/her professional practice in physical education and sports

    • is able to apply relevant research in order to improve as a teacher in physical education and sports

    • is aware of ethical issues related to research, included protection of personal data, source criticism and reference to sources

Examination requirements

  • Passed the practice period

  • Compulsory attendance requirements must be met (80%)

  • Approved dissemination of the research project. Please see description of the research project in separate guidelines.

  • Approved work requirements for students who have selected physical education as the first subject. Details will be given at start of the semester.

Teaching methods

The teaching will be characterized by a variety of work methods in the form of lectures, group work, conversation, practice and supervision. The students will also be in charge of planning as well as teaching eachother.

 

Apart from the teaching itself, students will be expected to work with various tasks, individually and in groups. A considerable amount of the students' learning and development will depend on individual efforts.

 

Because of the course is part of educational theory and practice, students are required to actively participate in practical exercises which are included in the teaching. Compulsory attendance is therefore required.

 

During the semester the student will implement a planned research project. This implies collecting data during the practice period and analyzing this data in light of relevant theory. Instructions for the presentation of the R&D project will be described separately.

The student will disseminate the research results in a written assignment in a structured and scientific manner . The student will present a self-chosen curriculum which is relevant to the assignment.

The students will have a six-week practice period in upper secondary school.

Estimated workload is about 400 hours.

 

Evaluation

The study programme manager, in consultation with the student representative, decides the method of evaluation and whether the courses will have a midterm- or end of term evaluation, see also the Quality System, section 4.1. Information about evaluation method for the course will be posted on Canvas.

Assessment methods and criteria

  • A graded individual oral examination which counts 50% of the final grade

  • A graded written assignment which counts 50% of the final grade
