Course contents

The course is a part of the 1-year programme in educational theory and practice which consists of didactics in one or two school subjects, pedagogy and practice.

The course is subdivided into three main areas:
- The school's position in society and the subject's place in education
- Pupil knowledge and the role of the teacher
- Teaching and learning

The school's position in society and the subject's place in education focuses on how education policy affects the subject. It will be discussed how society level affects curriculum, goals, contents, work methods and assessment methods in physical education and sports in upper secondary education. Critical reflection upon didactical problems in which questions about the subject physical education's legitimacy as a school subject will be of particular interest.

Pupil knowledge and the role of the teacher deals with knowledge about youth culture and diversity of the pupils' background and abilities, cultural and social differences included. Reflection upon professional ethics and what the role as a teacher in physical education and sports implies, will be focused.

Teaching and learning deals with didactical problems focusing on contents, work methods, learning strategies and teaching aids. Based on the students' knowledge and insight into the subject's didactics the course will focus on didactical reflections related to teaching physical education and sports at upper secondary level.

    • is able to plan, manage and evaluate his/her teaching in physical education and sports in upper secondary school

    • is able to apply varied learning strategies and adapt the teaching to various specializations, and has the ability to apply various forms of assessment which promote learning

    • is able to facilitate a learning environment which includes young people with minority backgrounds and other young people with spesific challenges

  • General competence
    The student

    • is able to further develop a professional attitude towards the teaching profession, and critically reflect upon professional ethical issues

    • is able to act as academically competent and didactically reflected in his/her professional practice in physical education and sports

    • is able to apply relevant research in order to improve as a teacher in physical education and sports

Examination requirements

To sit for the examination the students must have:

  • passed the practice periods

  • met the attendance requirements (80%)

  • passed the interdisciplinary educational research assignment (if course as subject one). Please see guidelines.

  • passed the written work requirement (if course as subject two)

 

Teaching methods

The teaching will be characterized by a variety of work methods in the form of lectures, group work, conversation, practice and supervision. The students will also be in charge of planning as well as teaching eachother.

 

Apart from the teaching itself, students will be expected to work with various tasks, individually and in groups. A considerable amount of the students' learning and development will depend on individual efforts.

 

Because of the course is part of educational theory and practice, students are required to actively participate in practical exercises which are included in the teaching. Compulsory attendance is therefore required.

 

Students who have selected physical education and sports as subject 1 will, in pairs or in smaller groups, carry out an interdisciplinary research assignment related to practice. Please see guidelines for how to present the results.

Students who have selected physical education and sports as subject 2 will do a written work requirement.

The students will have a six-week practice period in upper secondary school.

Estimated student work load is about 200 hours.

Evaluation

The study programme manager, in consultation with the student representative, decides the method of evaluation and whether the courses will have a midterm- or end of term evaluation, see also the Quality System, section 4.1. Information about evaluation method for the course will be posted on Canvas.

Assessment methods and criteria

A graded individual oral examination.
