Prerequisites

Passed first year of the bachelor's programme in physical education and sport

Course contents

  • The role of the coach in individual and team sports

  • The role of the coach concerning various age and performance level of the athletes

  • Individual coaching

  • Team coaching

  • The coach as a leader

  • Ethics and ethical reflection upon the coach's role

  • Applied coaching in meeting with the athlete

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of the course, the students will

  • possess wide-ranging knowledge related to the role of the coach

  • have a basic and useful competence in coaching at individual and team level

  • have an insight into his/her own appearance/role being able to establish good relations with the athletes

  • have competence in ethics in order to understand and handle challenges which can occur when being a coach

  • be able to apply coaching theory and principles in different sports contexts

Examination requirements

Compulsory attendance requirements must be met.

Approved individual reflection logs.

Teaching methods

Work methods will vary between lectures, practical work, seminars, basis groups, case work, group work and self study.

Estimated student workload is about 270 hours.

Evaluation

The study programme manager, in consultation with the student representative, decides the method of evaluation and whether the courses will have a midterm- or end of term evaluation, see also the Quality System, section 4.1. Information about evaluation method for the course will be posted on Canvas.
