Recommended prerequisites

The student must be able to swim. Beyond that, it is an advantage to be in normally good physical form.

Course contents

Theoretical topics:

  • Professional didactics with focus on public plans, the teacher role, and teaching tools

  • Play theory

  • The body as a symbol in today's society

  • Basic first-aid

Practical topics:

  • Introduction and training in a selection of sports and movement activities, e.g. ball, orienteering and dance

  • Play in different environments

  • Outdoor activities in the local environment

  • Swimming instruction

The subject in practice

During the practice period the students will work with didactic planning, implementation and reflection upon the teaching of physical education.

Knowledge

On successful completion of the course, the student will:

  • possess knowledge of the purpose and distinctive character of the subject physical education

  • possess knowledge of teaching planning, implementation and evaluation i physical education

  • possess knowledge of sports and movement activities, outdoor life and play in children's and youth culture

  • possess knowledge of the body as a symbol in today's society

  • possess knowledge of what can promote the joy of movement for pupils in grades 5-10

 

Skills

On successful completion of the course, the student will: 

  • be able to plan, carry out and evaluate the teaching of physical education according to laws and regulations, current curriculum, and professional ethical guidelines

  • be able to teach how to swim (grades 5-10)

  • based on his / her own skills and knowledge, be able to facilitate varied movement and sports activities, play and outdoor activities in physical education

  • be able to identify dangerous situations, assess and maintain the safety of the pupils in various activities and the movement environment indoors and outdoors

  • be able to examine and reflect upon his/her own bodily expression and movement experiences

 

 

General competence

On successful completion of the course, the student will:

  • be able to reflect upon how physical education can contribute to the pupils' general sense of decorum

  • be able to communicate with pupils and colleagues about physical education

  • be able to understand and develop his/her own teacher professionalism in the subject physical education

  • be able to understand and reflect upon research articles in physical education

Examination requirements

Primary and lower secondary school teacher students must have approved:

  • Completed teaching students

  • Completed first aid course

  • Active participation in compulsory teaching

Primary and lower secondary school teacher students must have passed:

  • the practice period

  • the practice assignment

 

Course students must have approved:

  • Completed teaching students

  • Completed first aid course

  • Didactic work of similar scope as the practice period for the teacher students

Teaching methods

Teaching will be given as lectures, group work, theoretical and practical work. Digital tools are used by both teachers and students where it is natural. Otherwise, student-active work methods are used, such as presentations and teaching each other.

Estimated student workload is approx. 400 hours. Teaching is compulsory. A minimum of 80 per cent attendance is required for the practical teaching. A minimum of 70 per cent attendance is required for other education.

20 days of practice for primary school teacher students is included. Other students will perform a didactic work of similar scope.

Evaluation

The study programme manager, in consultation with the student representative, decides the method of evaluation and whether the courses will have a midterm- or end of term evaluation, see also the Quality System, section 4.1. Information about evaluation method for the course will be posted on Canvas.
