Prerequisites

IDR134 Physical education and the joy of movement

Course contents

Theoretical topics:

  • Didactics with emphasis on pupil diversity and adapted teaching, assessment, use of the basic skills and interdisciplinary work

  • Life saving theory

  • Motor development and learning

 

Practical topics:

  • Beginner training and further progression in a selection of sports and movement activities such as gymnastics, skating, frisbee and motor skills

  • Activity and learning in nature

  • Life rescue in water

 

The subject in practice

During the practice period, the students will plan, implement and reflect upon a physical exercise session conducted during the practice period where the focus is on student diversity and adapted teaching.

Learning outcomes

Knowledge

On successful completion of the course,the student will:

  • have knowledge of the purpose and distinctive character of the subject physical education

  • have knowledge of teaching planning, implementation and evaluation in physical education

  • have knowledge of physical education assessment in grades 1-7

  • have knowledge of children's motor development and learning

  • have knowledge of play and movement activities and what can promote joy of movement for pupils in grades 1-7

 

Skills

On successful completion of the course, the student will:

  • be able to perform life rescue in water

  • be able to, based on his / her own skills and knowledge, facilitate varied movement activities, play and sports activities appropriate for beginners' education and teaching in physical education

  • be able to plan, carry out and evaluate the teaching of physical education according to laws and regulations, current curriculum, and professional ethical guidelines

  • be able to identify dangerous situations, assess and maintain the safety of the pupils in various activities and the movement environment indoors and outdoors

  • be able to include the basic skills in teaching on the subject's premises

  • be able to assess the pupils' bodily learning and qualifications as a basis for adapted teaching

  • be able to explore and reflect upon his/her own bodily expressions and movement experiences

  • be able to assess the pupils' goal achievement, justify the assessments and facilitate the students' self-assessment

General competence

On successful completion of the course, the student will:

  • be able to reflect upon how physical education can contribute to the pupils' general sense of decorum

  • be able to communicate with pupils, parents and colleagues about physical education

  • be able to understand and develop his/her own teacher professionalism in the subject physical education

  • be able to work with physical education and movement activities in an interdisciplinary perspective

  • be able to apply research-based knowledge in his/her own work

Examination requirements

Primary and lower secondary school teacher students must have approved:

  • Completed teaching students

  • Active participation in compulsory teaching

Primary and lower secondary school teacher students must have passed:

  • The practice period

  • the practice assignment

  • The life-saving test

 

Course students must have approved:

  • Completed and approved teaching students

  • Active participation in compulsory teaching

Course students must have passed:

  • Didactic work of similar scope as the practice period for the teacher students

  • The practice assignment

  • The life-saving test

Teaching methods

Teaching will be given as lectures, group work, theoretical and practical work. Digital tools are used by both teachers and students where it is natural. Otherwise, student-active work methods are used, such as presentations and teaching each other.

Estimated student workload is approx. 400 hours. Teaching is compulsory. A minimum of 80 per cent attendance is required for the practical teaching. A minimum of 70 per cent attendance is required for other education.

15 days of practice for primary school teacher students is included. Other students will perform a didactic work of similar scope.

Evaluation

The study programme manager, in consultation with the student representative, decides the method of evaluation and whether the courses will have a midterm- or end of term evaluation, see also the Quality System, section 4.1. Information about evaluation method for the course will be posted on Canvas.

Admission requirements are completed teacher education.

Assessment methods and criteria

The examination is divided into two parts:

  1. A graded individual practical-oral exam where the oral part is based on the practical implementation and theory. Weighted 50%.

  2. A graded three-day individual home exam within the theoretical topics. Weighted 50%.
