Course contents

The course is a part of the 1-year programme in educational theory and practice which consists of didactics in one or two school subjects, pedagogy and practice.

The course is subdivided into three main areas:
- The school's position in society and the subject's place in education
- Pupil knowledge and the role of the teacher
- Teaching and learning

The school's position in society and the subject's place in education deals with the distinctiveness of the subject of Physical Education, its development and its legitimization as a school subject.
The National Curriculum Regulations and relevant public documents will be focused. Reflections on didactical problems in physical education for the lower secondary school will also be focused.

Pupil knowledge and the role of the teacher examines relations, communication and collaboration in order to create a good learning environment in physical education. The diversity of the pupils' background and abilities, differentiation and adapted education will be emphasized.

Teaching and learning deals with didactic theories of teaching principles, work methods and learning strategies as a starting point for didactic reflection and educational practice in physical education. Basic skills in the subject physical education and interdisciplinary collaboration will also be included in the course.

The student

Skills

The student

  • has the ability to plan, carry out, lead and assess physical education in the lower secondary school

  • is able to make use of various teaching strategies and can adapt the work methods according to different prerequisites of the pupils in the lower secondary school

  • is able to prepare for a learning environment creating motivation and effort in physical education

  • is able to plan and create a research design with a researchable problem, method and plan for data collection

  • is able to supervise pupils in scientific work

 

General competence

The student

  • has the ability to reflect upon the subject, the work methods and the pupils' learning in the light of the National Curriculum and current educational policy

  • has the ability to reflect upon the interest and attitudes of children and youth concerning physical education and physical activities in school and leisure time

  • is able to prepare for interdisciplinary collaboration and adopting of the basic skills in the subject physical education in the lower secondary school

  • possesses competence in research ethics

Examination requirements

To sit for the examination the students must have:

  • passed the practice periods

  • met the attendance requirements (80%)

  • participated at the starting seminar

  • passed the interdisciplinary educational and didactic assignment

  • passed the written work requirement (if course as subject one). Detailed information will be given at start of semester.

Teaching methods

The teaching will have various work methods, like lectures, group work, discussion, practice and supervision.
The students will also be responsible for planning and implementing teaching for each other.

Besides teaching the students are expected to work with assignments, both individually and in pairs. A considerable amount of the students' learning and development will come through selfstudies.
The course is part of the
programme in educational theory and practice, and therefore the students are required to take active part in practical exercises which are included in the teaching. Consequently the course will have attendance requirements, the starting seminar included.

The student will carry out an interdisciplinary educational assignment.
The student will during the semester design a research project and work out a plan for implementing the research (research design). The plan must include a problem of discussion, reference to relevant theory, as well as method and how to collect data.


The students will have a six-week practice, primarily in lower secondary school.

Estimated student work load is about 400 hours.

Evaluation

The study programme manager, in consultation with the student representative, decides the method of evaluation and whether the courses will have a midterm- or end of term evaluation, see also the Quality System, section 4.1. Information about evaluation method for the course will be posted on Canvas.

Assessment methods and criteria

  • A graded 4-hour written school examination - counts 70% of the final grade

  • A graded written assignment (research design) - counts 30% of the final grade
