Course contents

The course is one part of the advanced teacher education level 8-13 and consists of didactics in two topics, pedagogy and practice.

The course in history didactics is subdivided into three main areas:

The school's position in society and the subject's place in education

Pupil knowledge and the role of the teacher

Teaching and learning

The school's position in society and the subject's place in education deals with the distinctiveness of history as a school subject, curricula and other official documents.

Pupil knowledge and the role of the teacher focuses on the role of the history teacher, including professional ethics. The course also deals with youth culture and the diversity of the pupils¿ abilities. Practical pedagogical skills in classroom management, communication and good learning environments are also central.

Teaching and learning treats didactic theories, work methods, learning strategies and teaching aids. Based on the students' knowledge of history and insight into the subject's didactics, the course will furthermore focus on didactic reflection and practical rehearsal in the form of planning, implementation, adjustment and assessment of the teaching of history at level 8-13.

Upon completion of the course the students will

Knowledge

• Have thorough knowledge about the didactics of history aimed at level 11-13

• Have insight in the subject curriculum for secondary school

• Have thorough insight in various learning strategies, teaching methods and learning arenas suitable for history

• Have thorough insight in the diversity of the pupils¿ abilities and interests

• Have thorough insight in multicultural society and the possibilities and challenges that this implies for teaching history

• Have insight in current subject didactic research

Skills

• Be able to analyze the curriculum and develop precise and relevant learning objectives

• Stay updated with regards to current regulations and curricula

• Have the ability to apply his/her professional and didactic knowledge in a way that enhances good academic and social learning processes

• Be able to plan, implement, adapt, document and assess history teaching

• Have the ability to make practical use of subject didactical research

• Initiate and implement subject didactical development work

• Have the ability to discuss and legitimate history as a school subject

General competence

• Have a professional attitude and reflect critically on questions related to the subject, professional ethics and school politics

Examination requirements

The mandatory attendance requirement (80%) must be acknowledged
The following must be assessed with a pass:
The practice period
For students taking history as subject 1 (master's level): An interdisciplinary assignment in pedagogy and didactics of history
For students taking history as subject 2 (one-year study): A written assignment

Teaching methods

Teaching will consist of a variety of work forms and will take the form of lectures, seminars, practice and supervision, excursions, conversation, reflection, interviews, presentations, preparation of teaching and other practical exercises. Practical testing of various forms of activities relating to history and the role of the teacher will be central.
Apart from the teaching students are expected to do work, both individually and in groups. A significant part of the students' learning and maturation will occur through such practice.
As the course is part of the advanced education level 8-13, it requires students' actual participation in practical assignments that are part of the teaching. Mandatory attendance will then be required.
Students taking history as subject 1 (master's level) will submit one interdisciplinary written assignment in pedagogy and didactics of history.
Students taking history as subject 2 (one-year course) will submit a written assignment.

The students will have six weeks of practice.
The workload is estimated to about 200 hours.

Evaluation

The study programme manager, in consultation with the student representative, decides the method of evaluation and whether the courses will have a midterm- or end of term evaluation, see also the Quality System, section 4.1. Information about evaluation method for the course will be posted on Canvas.
