Course contents

 The course has three parts:

  • subject of history (historiography) - central topics in contemporary historical debate

  • individual work with subject literature with a thematically limited research scope that may be relevant for a master's thesis

  • the syllabus for individual work comprises one-third of entire syllabus and is chosen in consultation with the course instructor.

Learning outcomes

 Upon course completion students will have acquired the following:

Knowledge

  • advanced knowledge of history as a science, its historical development, various research trends within the subject and what characterises topics and questions in current historical research

  • the ability to account for what characterises the subject¿s various genres and familiarity with history¿s most important dissemination forms and channels

  • a high level of insight into a thematically limited research field that can be relevant to a master¿s thesis, in other words familiarity with its basic concepts and major literature as well as insight into how this research field has developed over time

 

Skills

  • the ability to identify and discuss historical works from various periods and research fields in light of overall historiographical developments

  • the ability to reflect critically on central problems associated with historical research

  • the ability to formulate scholarly questions based on relevant research literature and independently analyse the basis for the various viewpoints, theories and methods

 

General Competency

  • the ability to present historical questions orally and in discussions with teachers and fellow students

  • the ability to analyse historical topics with scholarly documentation

Examination requirements

Students are required to participate actively at seminars during which each student is to make at least one oral presentation based on the course syllabus and reciprocally act as respondent at least once for a fellow student. In addition students will write an individual term assignment of 5-8 pages giving their critical assessment of a selection of subject-related literature that can be relevant for a master's thesis, and based on this work give an oral seminar presentation. The assignment and presentations must receive approval from the course instructor.

Teaching methods

Lectures and seminars. Oral presentations and participation in scholarly discussions with instructors and fellow students. The workload is estimated to 400 hours.

Evaluation

The study programme manager, in consultation with the student representative, decides the method of evaluation and whether the courses will have a midterm- or end of term evaluation, see also the Quality System, section 4.1. Information about evaluation method for the course will be posted on Canvas.

Assessment methods and criteria

One 6-hour written individual examination.
