Prerequisites

Course contents

The starting point for the bachelor's thesis is historical sources and research literature connected to period, themes and various topics within the subject of history. Learning about the basis for and gaining experience with academic writing of a certain scope are central aspects of the course. The courses in which advisement is provided vary from year to year.

Learning outcomes

  • have the ability to formulate a problem and follow this up through conducting research in an area of history

  • have broad knowledge about major topics in history

  • have knowledge about methods and theories considered important in the study of history

  • have insight into relevant research literature and the ability to use this literature to illuminate their own questions

  • be able to work independently and reflect in an analytical, critical and systematic manner with regard to historical and questions and their own professional development

  • master genre requirements and writing skills expected of an academic presentation

  • be able to participate in scholarly discussions in the field of history

  • be able to apply their knowledge in new areas

Examination requirements

A draft of the bachelor's thesis must be handed in and approved. Attendance is compulsory at one seminar where the student presents his or her own draft and is respondent to the oral presentation made by a fellow student.

Compulsory supervision: 2 individual sessions

Lectures, Seminars and advisement during work on the bachelor's thesis. Please refer to Guidelines for Written Assignments, Term Papers and Bachelor¿s Thesis in History, UiA. The workload is estimated to 270 hours.

Evaluation

The study programme manager, in consultation with the student representative, decides the method of evaluation and whether the courses will have a midterm- or end of term evaluation, see also the Quality System, section 4.1. Information about evaluation method for the course will be posted on Canvas.

Assessment methods and criteria

Written individual bachelor's thesis (7.000 words +/- 10%). Adjusting oral examination. An oral examination may adjust the grade given for the thesis. Differentiated grades.
