Course contents

The course is a part of the 1-year programme in educational theory and practice which consists of didactics in one or two school subjects, pedagogy and practice..

The position of education in society and the subject's place in education deals with the distinctiveness of the subject of History, its development and its legitimization as a school subject. Analysis and critical reflection on didactic problem will also be focused.

Pupil knowledge and the role of the teacher examines the role of the History teacher, and how knowledge of youth culture and the diversity of the pupils' background and abilities influence the teacher's work. Analysis and critical reflection and the teacher as a role model will also be emphasized. Pedagogical skills in class management, communication and building good learning environments will be focused.

Teaching and learning treats didactic theories, varied work methods and learning strategies. Basic skills, as well as interdisciplinary collaboration will be discussed. Based on the students knowledge of history and the didactics of history emphasis will be placed on didactic reflection and practical rehearsal in the form of planning, conducting, adapting, varying and assessing teaching at level 8-10.

Upon completion of the course students shall have acquired

  • about the pupils' abilities for learning history, their interest in and attitude to the subject

  • about scientific thoughts and methods in the subject / subject didactics

  • about the different phases of the research process

Skills
Upon completion of the course students shall

  • Be able to legitimate and explain history as a school subject

  • Be able to analyze and reflect upon the didactics of history

  • Be able to apply and justify variation of teaching methods

  • Be able to apply and assess various teaching aids

  • Be able to plan, implement, adapt and assess history teaching

  • Be able to plan and develop a research design with a researchable problem, method and plan for data collection

  • Be able to supervise pupils in scientific work

General competence
Upon completion of the course students shall

  • Be able to discuss and convey questions related to the subject and the subject didactics

  • Possess research ethical competence

Examination requirements

The following must be completed and passed:

  • The practice period

  • Mandatory attendance requirements

  • Mandatory attendance at the initial course

  • Interdisciplinary assignemnt with pedagogy and didactics

Teaching methods

The teaching will be characterized by å variety of work methods in the form of lectures, practice and supervision, excursions, conversations, reflection, interview, presentations, planning of teaching and other practical exercises. Practical testing of various work methods related to history and the teacher role will be emphasized.

Apart from the teaching it will be expected that the students work with exercises, both individually and in groups. A considerable part of the students¿ learning and development will depend on individual efforts.

The students' actual participation in practical tasks is a necessary part of the teaching. Mandatory attendance will then be required, including the pre-course.

The students will write an interdisciplinary assignment with pedagogy.

The students shall during the semester plan a research project and develop a plan for implementation of the research work (research design). The plan must comprise a problem, specification of relevant theory, as well as method and a plan for data collection.

The students will have six weeks of practice, primarily in lower secondary school.

The workload is estimated to about 400 hours.

Evaluation

The study programme manager, in consultation with the student representative, decides the method of evaluation and whether the courses will have a midterm- or end of term evaluation, see also the Quality System, section 4.1. Information about evaluation method for the course will be posted on Canvas.
