The course will primarily treat problem areas associated with the period after 1900. Wars and conflicts from an ethical perspective. The study of 2-4 conflicts in the world in which the main emphasis of the content is connected with the period after 1900.
Learning outcomes
Upon course completion students will have

closely studied and become able to answer questions of an historical and ethical-philosophical nature: What do we know about wars? How do they start? What have people done to prevent war? Are there justifiable wars?

acquired a basic insight into the ethics of conflict resolution

an overview of 2-4 conflicts/wars in the twentieth century

learned how to write a term paper in history in which they delve into the course literature, work in a systematic and problem-oriented manner, and have evaluated and discussed their own and other students¿ work

familiarity and experience with academic argumentation technique and the ability to document written work in a scholarly manner
Examination requirements
Students must submit and receive approval for an outline/draft of their term paper within a given deadline (minimum one page).
Practice for teacherstudents. It is not obligatory for students in the teacher education to hand in a draft for the termpaper, but the students who wish to do so, may hand in the draft and receive feedback, like the other students attending the course.
Teaching methods
Lectures, seminars and advisement. Practice for the teacherstudents. The workload is estimated to 270 hours.
Evaluation
The study programme manager, in consultation with the student representative, decides the method of evaluation and whether the courses will have a midterm- or end of term evaluation, see also the Quality System, section 4.1. Information about evaluation method for the course will be posted on Canvas.

Individual term paper of approximately 10 pages (70 %).
One 2-hour individual written examination (30 %).
