Course contents

Economic systems, hunters and gatherers, the agricultural revolution, state formation, ancient history, intercultural networks, capitalism and the industrial society's breakthrough in Western Europe, African, East Asian history and Latin American history.

Learning outcomes

Upon course completion students will have:

  • an overview of political, cultural and economic systems that have characterised global history

  • the ability to account for differences between kinship society, tributes society and capitalistic society

  • an overview of ancient history

  • an overview of African history

  • the ability to critically evaluate various representations of capitalism and the emergence of industrial society

  • the ability to discuss the historical background for the great economic differences in today's world, including a special focus on making comparisons between East Asia, Africa and Latin America

  • the necessary competency to familiarise themselves with new problem areas and analyse a case from several angles

Examination requirements

Students in the teacher education: The practice must be completed and passed.

All other students: Preliminary test. Further information will be posted on Canvas when the semester starts.

Teaching methods

Lectures and colloquium groups. Practice for teacherstudents. The workload is estimated to 270 hours.

Evaluation

The study programme manager, in consultation with the student representative, decides the method of evaluation and whether the courses will have a midterm- or end of term evaluation, see also the Quality System, section 4.1. Information about evaluation method for the course will be posted on Canvas.
