Course contents

  • Identifying public health challenges on all levels (survey tools)

  • Public health challenges in nutrition, physical activity, and mental health

  • Determinants for food choices and diet related behavior, physical activity, and mental health

  • Public health policies related to nutrition, physical activity, and mental health

  • Common tools for working with policies, practical placement and research, public health cycle

  • Planning for public health measures on local, regional, and national levels as well as for selected population groups in nutrition, physical activity, and mental health

  • Implementing measures on different levels in nutrition, physical activity, and mental health

  • Evaluating public health measures on different levels in nutrition, physical activity, and mental health

Learning outcomes

On succesful completion of the course, students will:

  • Be able to identify and demonstrate advanced knowledge on public health challenges in different age groups connected to nutrition, physical activity, and mental health on local, regional, and national levels

  • Demonstrate thorough knowledge on determinants for food choices and diet related behavior, physical activity, and mental health which promote health and prevent disease and injury

  • Be able to account for global, national, and regional political, economic, and legal provisions in public health regarding nutrition, physical activity, and mental health

  • Demonstrate advanced knowledge about the classic stages of working with public health, public health cycle

  • Be able to use public health cycle as a tool related to the work with nutrition, physical activity, and mental health

  • Be able to develop and implement public health measures related to nutrition, physical activity, and mental health on local, regional, and national levels and in different sectors

  • Be able to employ analysis tools to carry out evaluations of public health work in nutrition, physical activity, and mental health with theory and empirical data as starting point

  • Be able to analyze and relate critically to different sources of information and scientific literature in the dissemination of the subject

Examination requirements

Successful completion of work requirements. The work requirements is completed in group and participation in the presentation of the assignment is compulsory. The work requirement is further explained in the course brochure.

Teaching methods

Mainly lectures, seminars, group work, and excursions. Further information will be given at the beginning of the semester. Compulsory attendance.

The student workload is estimated to 400 hours.

Evaluation

The study programme manager, in consultation with the student representative, decides the method of evaluation and whether the courses will have a midterm- or end of term evaluation, see also the Quality System, section 4.1. Information about evaluation method for the course will be posted on Canvas.

Assessment methods and criteria

A 5-hour written individual examination. Letter grades A-F will be given.
