Course contents

In this course we will look at the ethics of technology. The key questions we will discuss are divided into three batches: (i) Can technology be value neutral? (ii) What kind of new ethical problems arise as a result of modern biotechnology, digital technology and artificial intelligence? (iii) Is virtue ethics particularly well suited for dealing with newer technology?

Learning outcomes

After completing the course, students will

Knowledge

  • have an overview of key ethical concepts, especially within virtue ethics

  • have insight into key issues within the ethics of technology

  • have insight into key ethical issues related to biotechnology and today's digital technology

Skills

  • be able to discuss the central concepts and theories within the ethics of technology

  • be able to apply concepts and theories from ethics to current technology and technological developments

General competence

  • be able to explain the value and relevance of ethics for current technology and technological developments

Examination requirements

The student must have participated in the compulsory gathering during the semester (3-4 days), submitted two tests, and completed at least one supervision session (online). For dates and other details, see Canvas.

Teaching methods

The course is online with a joint collection, digital lectures, shorter and longer written assignments, online discussions, both individually and in groups, as well as supervision. The scope of work is estimated at approx. 270 hours.

Evaluation

The person responsible for the course decides, in cooperation with student representative, the form of student evaluation and whether the course is to have a midway or end of course evaluation in accordance with the quality system for education, chapter 4.1.

Assessment methods and criteria

A short article (400-800 words) counting 10% of the total grade, a longer article (approx. 5000 words) counting 90% of the total grade and adjusting the online oral exam. All exam forms are individual. Graded assessment.
