Course contents

The course gives an introduction to contemporary philosophy of religion. It is the study of the possibility of the existence of a God, and of concepts and problems like evil, religious experience, religious knowledge and justification. Central questions: Is there a God? If a God exists, what can we know about this God? If there is a God, why is there so much apparent evil in the world? Can we achieve any kind of religious knowledge?

Learning outcomes

Upon course completion students will

Knowledge

  • Have broad knowledge of philosophy of religion as a subject

  • Have knowledge of the three principal types of proofs of God's existence

  • Have knowledge of the problem of evil

Skills

  • Be able to reflect upon theism, atheism and agnosticism

  • Be able to apply philosophical reflection in religious discussions

General Competence

  • Be able to communicate central arguments for theism, atheism and agnosticism

  • Be able to apply knowledge and insight from the philosophy of religion to other and more recent problems related to religion

Teaching methods

Lectures and discussion groups. The workload is estimated to ca. 270 hours.

Evaluation

The study programme manager, in consultation with the student representative, decides the method of evaluation and whether the courses will have a midterm- or end of term evaluation, see also the Quality System, section 4.1. Information about evaluation method for the course will be posted on Canvas.
