Course contents

Introduction to phenomenology, existentialism, dialogue philosophy, ethics, and scientific method, and application of this theory to communication media and technology. Phenomenology takes as its starting point the human subject and investigates subjects like consciousness in general, perception, the relation between subjective experience and objective truth, the relation between consciousness and the body, imagination, emotions, etc. The existentialism and the dialogue philosophy are further developments of phenomenology which study subjects like freedom and choice, anxiety, ethical responsibility and communication between humans. The main focus will be on the philosophy of Edmund Husserl, Jean-Paul Sartre, Søren Kierkegaard, Martin Buber, Emmanuel Lévinas, Knud E. Løgstrup, and Marshall McLuhan.

Learning outcomes

After completing the course, the student is expected to have:

  • a general knowledge on the phenomenological method and related philosophy

  • a basis for understanding and making judgements of ethical end existential questions, in particular those related to the application of communication media and other kinds of technology in society
