Basic principles of wind energy - classification of wind turbines, power and torque relationships, tip speed ratio and dynamic matching

Aerodynamics of wind turbines: airfoil lift and drag, Basic aerodynamic theories like axial momentum theory, blade element theory and blade element momentum theory, aerodynamic design and performance analysis of wind turbine rotors

Wind energy resource: wind meteorology, statistical analysis of wind data, wind resource analysis, power curves and wind turbine performance models

Wind turbine systems: rotor, generators, power transmission systems, control systems, safety devices

Wind farm planning and management: wake losses, optimal wind turbine siting, grid integration of wind energy, offshore systems, economic-environmental aspects of wind energy projects
Learning outcomes
On successful completion of the course, the student should be able to

have knowledge on the fundamental principles of wind energy conversion

understand the basic aerodynamic theories and its application in wind rotor design

get an exposure to various components of a wind energy conversion systems

know the methods for wind resource analysis and wind farm siting

have basic skills for the planning of wind energy projects
Examination requirements
Satisfactory submission of individual compulsory exercises and project assignments. Information will be given in the Canvas at the beginning of the course.
Teaching methods
Lectures and exercises. Estimated work load for the average student is approximately 200 hours.
Evaluation
The study programme manager decides, in cooperation with student representative, the form of student evaluation and whether the course is to have a midway or end of course evaluation in accordance with the quality system for education, chapter 4.1.
