Course contents
Hydro power: Introduction to the elements of hydraulics and hydrology used in the design of hydropower plants. Describe system components and hydraulic events at small and large hydropower plants. Hydraulics: The properties of water, the equations of energy and continuity, pipe and channel hydraulics, pressure surge suppression.
Wind power plants: Basic introduction to the windmill structure. Aerodynamic topics of importance for energy production with wind turbines.
Learning outcomes
On successful completion of the course, the student should be able to:
-
explain the elements of hydraulics and hydrology used in the design of hydropower plants
-
perform calculations involved in pre-engineering of small hydropower plants
-
participate in the evaluation of modifications of large hydropower plants
-
explain the basic issues related to the establishment of wind farms
Examination requirements
Mandatory assignments must be completed and approved. An overview of required tasks will be given during the beginning of the semester in Canvas.
Teaching methods
Lectures and exercises. Excursion to a hydropower plant. Laboratory exercises in the wind section of the course.
Estimated work load for the average student is 27 hours per credit.
Evaluation
The study programme manager, in consultation with the student representative, decides the method of evaluation and whether the courses will have a midterm- or end of term evaluation, see also the Quality System, section 4.1. Information about evaluation method for the course will be posted on Canvas.
