Course contents

The course focusses on the teaching of English as a foreign language in Norwegian schools. The students will get insight into contrasts between Norwegian and English that often create problems to pupils who are learning English. Particular emphasis will be put on learning and teaching strategies in accordance with current curriculum plans for primary education. Challenges pertaining to the teaching of English in a multicultural and multilingual school will also be reflected in the course.

Learning outcomes

Knowledge: Upon completion of the course the student has acquired

  • specific knowledge about the most important contrasts between Norwegian and English and their importance in foreign language teaching and learning

  • in-depth knowledge about theories on language acquisition, including those that have been particularly influential to foreign language teaching in Norwegian schools

  • knowledge about language didactic research and research methods regarding English as a subject in Norwegian schools

  • knowledge about learning and teaching strategies in accordance with current curriculum plans for primary education

Skills: Upon completion of the course the student can

  • account for the most important contrasts between Norwegian and English and their importance in foreign language teaching and learning

  • account for key factors and theories in foreign language teaching and learning

  • critically evaluate different language acquisition theories

  • apply this knowledge didactically and thoughtfully in accordance with current curriculum plans for primary education

  • apply relevant methods in language didactic research

General competence: Upon completion of the course the student can

  • use his/her knowledge as a basis for further studies in language didactics and R&D work

  • use his/her knowledge and skills in work related to teaching, communication, supervision and/or public information

Examination requirements

The following requirements must be met: one obligatory essay and one oral presentation must be assessed as a pass. Attendance requirement: 80% compulsory attendance.

Teaching methods

Lectures and group work. Continuous and active participation. Attendance of 80% required to sit for the exam in the course. The workload is estimated to 200 hours.

Evaluation

The study programme manager, in consultation with the student representative, decides the method of evaluation and whether the courses will have a midterm- or end of term evaluation, see also the Quality System, section 4.1.

Assessment methods and criteria

A one-week home exam. Graded assessment.
