Course contents

The course conveys knowledge of literature and culture and the role they play in a Norwegian educational context, also from a historical perspective. The students will get insight into the most important theories, concepts and models for the study and teaching of literature and culture. In addition, important aspects such as teaching context, motivation, learning strategies and language acquisition will be emphasised. Challenges pertaining to the teaching of English in a multicultural and multilingual school will also be reflected in the course.

Learning outcomes

Knowledge: Upon completion of the course the student has acquired

  • knowledge about selected literary texts and cultural topics with a special focus on the aspect of conveying and transmitting knowledge

  • knowledge about the role of literature and culture in the teaching of English in Norwegian schools

  • knowledge about research in the didactics of literature and culture in English as a school subject, also in a Norwegian school context

Skills: Upon completion of the course the student has acquired

  • the ability to account for important principles for the study of literature and culture

  • the ability to account for important principles for the teaching of literature and culture to students in schools

  • the ability to evaluate critically literary and non-fictitious texts and the application of these for educational purposes

  • the ability to apply this knowledge didactically and reflected in accordance with current curriculum plans for primary education

General competence: Upon completion of the course the student has acquired

  • competence to use his/her knowledge as a basis for further studies in the didactics of literature and culture and research in this field

  • competence to use his/her knowledge and skills in work related to teaching, communication and/or public information

  • competence to reflect critically and independently on the subject of English as a school subject and a scientific subject, and account for the relation between the two

Examination requirements

The following requirements must be met: 1 obligatory essay. Attendance requirement: 80% compulsory attendance.

Teaching methods

Lectures and group work. Continuous and active participation. Attendance of 80% required to sit for the exam in the course. Estimated workload: 200 hours.

Evaluation

The study programme manager, in consultation with the student representative, decides the method of evaluation and whether the courses will have a midterm- or end of term evaluation, see also the Quality System, section 4.1.

Assessment methods and criteria

A one-week home exam. Graded assessment.
