Same pre-requisites apply as for the master's programme in English or the 2-year master's programme in Primary Teacher Education.

Course contents

This course gives a general introduction to linguistic theory. The insight offered into language representation, especially to word meaning, will be of use to students pursuing specialisations in both linguistics and literature. The first part of the course provides a historical introduction to linguistic theory in the key areas of phonology, morphology and syntax. The second part of the course introduces students to the study of language and mind focussing on the mental lexicon. It provides an overview experimental psycho-linguistic approaches to the representation and processing of language.

Learning outcomes

Knowledge: upon successful completion of the course the student has 

  • basic knowledge of the linguistic structure of language in terms of semantics, syntax, morphology, phonology and phonetics

  • knowledge of historical development of linguistic theory

  • knowledge of theoretical issues underlying the representation of language in the mind

  • knowledge of a range of methodological approaches to the study of language

Skills: upon successful completion of the course the student will be able to 

  • express basic knowledge of the linguistic structure of language in terms of semantics, syntax, morphology, phonology

  • describe and evaluate theoretical linguistic approaches to the underlying structure of language

  • evaluate theories and evidence about the mental representation of language

  • evaluate a range of methodological approaches to the study of language

Examination requirements

To be allowed to take the final exam, one article summary must be assessed as a Pass.

Teaching methods

Lectures and seminars. Active and regular participation is encouraged. Estimated workload: Approximately 200 hours.

Evaluation

The study programme manager, in consultation with the student representative, decides the method of evaluation and whether the courses will have a midterm- or end of term evaluation, see also the Quality System, section 4.1.

Assessment methods and criteria

4-hour written examination. An English-English dictionary is allowed. Graded assessment.
