Course contents

This course will focus on expository writing, especially the critical essay. Students will learn about the constituent parts of essays. They will also learn how to develop and support an argument, how to achieve coherence between sentences and paragraphs, how to use standard source documentation formats, how to integrate source materials into their written work, and how to think, read, and write critically.

Learning outcomes

Upon completion of the course, the student

  • is familiar with the fundamental principles of academic writing in English.

Having completed the course, the student

  • can develop an independent thesis or research question of sufficient complexity.

  • can use and evaluate source material and integrate quotations.

  • can structure paragraphs including topic and support sentences.

  • can link paragraphs together into a coherent and focused academic essay.

  • can document and cite sources used in their texts.

Examination requirements

All students: 70 % compulsory attendance. For the teacher-training students: Practice and one assignment must be assessed as a pass. Other students: Two assignments must be assessed as a pass.

Teaching methods

Lectures, group work and writing of assignments. Practice for teacher-training students. The workload is estimated at 135 hours.

Evaluation

The study programme manager, in consultation with the student representative, decides the method of evaluation and whether the courses will have a midterm- or end of term evaluation, see also the Quality System, section 4.1. Information about evaluation method for the course will be posted on Canvas.

Assessment methods and criteria

Portfolio exam. The components in the portfolio will be communicated by the course instructor in Canvas at the beginning of the term.
