Recommended prerequisites

IKT204-G Data communication and ELE213-G Signal Processing, or the equivalent.

Course contents

Wireless propagation in general, antennas and radio signals. Channel properties. Baseband and digital modulation principles. Access mechanisms. FEC. Various communication systems such as NFC, Bluetooth, WiFi, GSM, LTE, etc.

Learning outcomes

After completing the course, the student will:

  • understand signal propagation in cables and be able calculate cable- and antenna-interface properties

  • understand and be able to calculate propagation model in wireless medium

  • understand various baseband and modulation schemes and be able to compare the differences

  • understand different medium access mechanisms and the underlying principles

  • have knowledge of orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM), spread spectrum and code division multiple access (CDMA)

  • understand the concept of FEC and be able to make basic calculations

  • have an overview of the most important wireless technologies (NFC, Bluetooth, WiFi, LTE, etc.)

  • be able to distinguish different characteristics of communication systems and choose the right technology for a particular system

  • be able to convey professional knowledge in writing

  • be able to participate in professional discussions within communication and share their experiences with others

Examination requirements

Compulsory assignments must be approved in order to take the examination. Information about compulsory assignments will be given in Canvas at the start of the semester.

Lectures and exercises.

Estimated workload for the average student is approximately 200 hours.

Evaluation

The person responsible for the course decides, in cooperation with student representative, the form of student evaluation and whether the course is to have a midway or end of course evaluation in accordance with the quality system for education, chapter 4.1.

Admission Requirement if given as Single Standing Module

Higher Education Entrance Qualification including mathematics R1 and R2 and physics Fysikk 1, or a pass in the preliminary course examination for engineers (which is also offered at University of Agder).

Assessment methods and criteria

4 hours written examination. Graded assessment.
