Course contents

Basic prinsiples of signals, digitalisation and compression. Audio in the analogue and digital domain. Analogue an digital studio technology (microphones, preamps, mixers, filters, effects, recording systems etc). Some musical instrument technology. Software for music recording and audio and MIDI editing.

Learning outcomes

After completion of the course the candidate should be able to:

  • Explain the basic properties of sound, the sinus signal and its derivatives.

  • Explain the central parameters of digitalisation and the principles of AD/DA converters.

  • Give a record of the main features of a modern computer based studio and set up and carry out recordings in such a facility.

  • Use audio sequenser software and do audio and MIDI editing.

Examination requirements

Approved compulsory attendance. Students must pass the compulsory assignments in order to take the examination. Information on assignments will be given in the LMS in the start of the course.

Teaching methods

Lectures, rehersals and practical studio work. Groupwise exam project. Attendance requirements in the practical segment of the course.

The work load for the average student is approximately 270 hours.

Evaluation

The study programme manager, in consultation with the student representative, decides the method of evaluation and whether the courses will have a midterm- or end of term evaluation, see also the Quality System, section 4.1. Information about evaluation method for the course will be posted on Canvas.

Assessment methods and criteria

3-hour written examination in the autumn semester counts 50% of the final grade. Project work done in groups in the spring semester counts 50% of the final grade. The groups are normally given joint grades on the group project, but in cases of documented differences in the contribution to the project from the group members, students may be graded individually.
