Prerequisites

For admission to the course, the student must have achieved a minimum of 75 ECTS from the education plan. BYG515 Specialization project and other courses that the Master Thesis is base on, must be passed. The topic and research question must be approved be the University of Agder.

Course contents

The Master Thesis shall be independent work within central topics of the study. The work shall be research oriented and increase the understanding for execution and management of larger research projects. The thesis will be presented in a report, which describes the problem, solutions, results and the work. The project will be presented orally, in public. The Master’s Thesis is evaluated according to The Norwegian Association of Higher Education Institutions recommended guidelines for evaluation of master thesis in the field om MNT-education.

Learning outcomes

The students shall after completion of the Master’s Thesis be able to plan and execute a larger project logically and efficient, and present the results in a professional manner. Through the work with the Master Thesis and the methodology seminar which is part of the work, the students will also learn to evaluate research and scientific papers, and achieved a basis to document future R&D-projects.

Requirements for the exam

  • Participation in 5 mandatory mentoring sessions

  • Research question must be handed in according to schedule (Study program manager provides schedule)

  • Progress schedule must be handed in according to schedule (Study program manager provides schedule)

Teaching methods

Independent work individual or in groups (2-3 students) with project tasks, with mentoring. Each project has a minimum of 5 hours mandatory mentoring. Both the students and the mentor have a joint responsibility to make sure that these 5 mentoring sessions are competed.
Estimated workload for the average student is 27 hours per credit.

Evaluation

The study programme manager, in consultation with the student representative, decides the method of evaluation and whether the courses will have a midterm- or end of term evaluation, see also the Quality System, section 4.1. Information about evaluation method for the course will be posted on Canvas.

Assessment methods and criteria

Exam Project report carried out individual or in a group. Graded assessment. Individual grade can be givenaccording to the oral presentation. The oral presentation can adjust the grade up or down one grade. It is not allowed to submit an improved version of a previous report when it comes to a new or postponed exam.
